American Express Offers Back-to-School Incentives

American Express is boosting sales of its gift card with a $25 back-to school shopping card at select retailers

People who buy two American Express gift cards through Sept. 30 will receive a $25 Back-to-school shopping card from the company. The gift card can be used at Banana Republic, Old Navy, Gap and Linens ‘n Things.

The effort marks the first time American Express is offering a companion card as a gift card incentive, company spokesman Rob Sherman said.

The promotion is being marketed in-store at participating retailers, including A&P, Albertsons, CVS, Duane Reade, Pak N Save, Rite Aid, Safeway, Tom Thumb and Winn Dixie, American Express said.

Shoppers spent $50 billion on back-to-school supplies, including for college, in 2006, according to the National Retail Federation.

American Express launched its gift cards in 2002. The cards are available in denominations of $25 to $500. The company also offers themed gift cards for holidays and special occasions, including, birthdays and dining out.
