ALA Contest Sending Winner to World Series

The American Library Association (ALA), Major League Baseball and the MLB Players Association have kicked off the fourth-annual "Major Leagues @ your library contest," an online baseball trivia contest that will send a grand-prize winner and a guest to a 2005 World Series game.

The contest will run through Sept. 9, and is the centerpiece of "Join the Major Leagues @ your library," a program created to create awareness of baseball and technologies used in libraries.

The contest challenges baseball fans to use the resources at their local library to answer a series of baseball trivia questions, developed by the librarians at the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum. Questions are available at ala.org/baseball.

Contestants download a playbook, appropriate for their age group (under 10, 11-13, 14-17, and 18 and over), with four categories of questions (one for each of the four bases in a baseball diamond). Unlike most contests, participants are encouraged to look up answers using both print and online sources at their library and participants can even consult a librarian if they need assistance.

The grand-prize winner will be chosen at random, and receive tickets to a World Series game, roundtrip airfare and hotel accommodations for two nights.

The contest also awards 12 first-place prizes, including a copy of Promises to Keep, a book written by Jackie Robinson's daughter, Sharon Robinson, a baseball T-shirt and a poster featuring Jackie Robinson.
