Google is linking its online maps service with Valpak's local merchants, giving users a chance to find savings alongside their Internet search. The goal behind the free service is to make the Internet more appealing for consumers to shop and give businesses new advertising options.

Small- and medium-size businesses promote themselves through their own coupons. Coupon savings include dry cleaners, dentists, pizza places, car washes, oil changes, handymen and home remodelers, Google said. The coupons appear below the map and address when consumers search their local area for specific categories.

Google's printable coupon services will give Valpak advertisers "enhanced distribution tied to their existing listing on Google Maps," said Todd Leiser, VP and general manager for Valpak.com, Valpak's online coupon portal, in a statement.

The Google service, which launched yesterday, will offer more than 20,000 coupons online from advertisers that work with Largo, FL-based Valpak, Google said.
