Stolen Base Triggers Taco Bell Giveaway

Strategically shifting its World Series promotional play from home run targets to stolen bases, Taco Bell hit the mark for a crunchy beef taco bonanza tomorrow.

The suspense around this year’s “Steal a Base, Steal a Taco” promotion ended improbably when the Boston Red Sox—not renowned for their base-running skills—managed a stolen base in the second game of the series last week. So as Red Sox reserve outfielder Jacob Ellsbury pulled into second base uncontested in the fourth inning, free taco day became a reality for Taco Bell.

But just like at the ballpark, there are ground rules. Anyone can pick up a free crunchy beef taco tomorrow, Oct. 30, at any participating Taco Bell restaurant of 5,600 across the country between 2 p.m. and 5 p.m. local time.

It’s been a long time coming. Taco Bell was 0-for-4 in its “Free Taco Targets” tactic in four previous World Series – including last year’s third game when the target was widened to encompass half of the outfield.

“We were cheering alongside the entire nation, knowing someone would steal a taco for America,” said David Ovens, Taco Bell chief marketing officer, in a statement.

Taco Bell will also contribute $20,000 to the Boy & Girls Club of America as part of the steal deal.

No word on what kind of ploy Taco Bell may be planning for next year’s World Series. Did someone say free burritos for a sacrifice bunt?
